While 4leggers has grown into a site that offers fact sheets, helpful tips, and feature stories about all four-legged mammals from household cats to mountain lions, bears, elephants and even mice, the foundation of 4leggers is our love of dogs.

To help educate the public about how important canines are to our everyday life, even though we often don’t know it, 4leggers has launched a series of stories about some of the most courageous dogs in the world: CIA K9 officers.

Check out of pages of active CIA K9 officers and those dogs who have been enshrined in the CIA K9 Hall of Fame.

If you know of any courageous dogs – whether working dogs or just a neighbor’s dog who saved a life or did something courageous – please contact us and we’ll follow up about doing a story: change [at] sherpamultimedia [dot] com.

CIA K9 Officer

NAME: Laverne

BREED: Labrador retriever

SPECIALTY: undisclosed

BIRTHPLACE: Cape Cod, Massachusetts, United States

Hi, my name is Laverne. I am a yellow Lab and I weigh about 57 pounds. I was born in Cape Cod, Mass., on Dec. 13, 2005.

As a puppy, I went through training with Guiding Eyes for the Blind Program (GEB). I kept getting distracted by all the stuff around me. That was a big no-no. I left GEB and went to the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF). I spent six weeks learning the different odors of explosives.

Once I finished this program, I met my partner, K-9 Officer Jack. We began our 10-week training course together.

We became best friends right away. I remember when Officer Jack and I met for the first time. I was so excited that I just couldn’t stop jumping for joy! And I can jump high! I was always jumping during training. All my classmates and their partners started calling me “Leaping Laverne.” Officer Jack is now teaching me to only jump when I need to so that I don’t jump up on everyone.

After training was completed, Officer Jack took me home to live with my new family, his wife and my new brother Kingston. Kingston is a yellow Lab, too, but he isn’t a working dog like me.

At home, I enjoy relaxing or playing with my KONG ball with Kingston. We are always roughhousing. He outweighs me by about 30 pounds, but I always show him who is boss. I love being able to hang out with my mommy because she lets me get on the couch and lay beside her. She always gives me tons of hugs and kisses. I love having Officer Jack as a partner, and I love my family.

I love working at the CIA and meeting new people. If you see me, come say “hi.” But ask Officer Jack first because I may be working.
